Aurora City Council considers data center moratorium
The Aurora City Council is considering an indefinite moratorium on new data center applications while it develops regulations for the industry. Residents opposed to Vantage’s proposed Trident data center raised concerns about neighborhood impacts, while Vantage said it is evaluating alternative locations but continues to pursue the currently zoned site.
Aurora City Council member Amy Wiles has proposed an indefinite moratorium on accepting new data center applications until the city adopts development standards. The council heard public testimony as residents voiced concerns about the expansion of data centers and their effects on nearby neighborhoods, including the Reserve at Green Valley Ranch.
The proposal comes as Vantage’s Trident data center remains under review at a site where current zoning permits data center operations. Vantage said it is working with the City of Aurora, Xcel Energy and other partners to assess whether alternative locations could meet the project’s technical, energy and operational requirements, while continuing to advance the existing site.
