The pause, effective immediately through April 5, 2027, will allow city officials and planners to study potential code changes for data center development.

The Ellensburg City Council approved an emergency moratorium halting the acceptance, processing and approval of data center building permits and land-use applications. The measure took effect immediately after the council’s October 5 meeting and is scheduled to remain in place through April 5, 2027, unless it is changed or repealed.

City officials said Ellensburg’s existing code does not classify data centers as a separate land use or establish development standards and review procedures specifically for them. The moratorium will give city staff, the Planning Commission and the City Council time to consider possible amendments to the city code.
