Political and community opposition is growing against a proposed data center near the Nashville Zoo. Mayor Freddie O O Connell signed an executive order to study data center impacts and support a proposed moratorium and new zoning restrictions. A petition against the project has over 400,000 signatures, and Sen. Marsha Blackburn has also spoken out against the placement.

Connell also voiced support for a Metro Council initiative to temporarily pause permits for such facilities. The proposed moratorium, which has passed its first of three required votes, would halt new permit acceptances or approvals until November or until zoning restrictions are enacted.

Separate zoning restrictions, also having passed their first vote, would ban data centers larger than 500,000 square feet and impose limitations on smaller facilities. This local pushback is supported by Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn, who suggested that while data centers are important for Tennessee's economic growth, their placement needs careful consideration, especially near vital resources like the Nashville Zoo. Many other communities in Tennessee have also enacted or are considering moratoriums on data center construction.
