Community members in Northeast El Paso are continuing their fight against a controversial data center project by Meta. The Amanecer People's Project hosted a public comment workshop to inform residents about previous city council actions regarding the data center and present their findings on its potential environmental and economic impacts, including concerns about energy, pollution, and water.

The workshop also guided participants on how to sign up for public comment before the El Paso City Council. An organizer noted the high level of concern expressed at town-hall meetings in March, where close to 400 people attended, leading to the push to cancel Meta's tax abatement.

This coming Tuesday, the El Paso City Council is scheduled to discuss an item, introduced by City Representatives Jose Acevedo and Lily Limon, that would initiate the process to terminate the city's tax-incentive agreement with Meta. However, a joint statement from the City Manager and City Attorney cautioned that canceling the economic incentive agreement, originally approved in 2023, would likely lead to significant legal challenges.
