Tazewell County data center moratorium approval nears the finish line
Tazewell County is considering a nine-month moratorium on new data center applications, with the county board expected to vote on the measure Oct. 28. County officials are also drafting a data center ordinance that would initially require facilities to be located in industrial-zoned areas.
Tazewell County, Illinois, is moving toward a county board vote on a proposed nine-month moratorium on data center applications. The county Zoning Board of Appeals approved the measure and returned it to the Land Use Committee, which is expected to recommend approval and send it to the full board for consideration on Oct. 28.
During the moratorium, county officials plan to develop a broader data center ordinance. The draft currently includes a requirement that data centers be built only in industrial-zoned areas, while officials have not set a completion date. The proposed timeline may also be affected by the Illinois POWER Act, legislation addressing data center environmental, water and energy impacts.
