The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has approved a military compatibility permit for "Project Baccara," a proposed large-scale data center development in the West Valley near Surprise, Arizona. Despite strong community opposition, the permit was greenlit in a four-to-one vote on May 6. Project Baccara plans to feature two data center buildings powered by on-site natural gas generators. Opponents raised concerns about its proximity to thousands of homes, schools, and community centers, citing potential increases in surrounding temperatures, air pollution, and water consumption. However, Supervisor Debbie Lesko emphasized that the meeting's focus was solely on the military compatibility permit, not the overall viability of the project. Luke Air Force Base officials had previously outlined conditions for compatibility in a March letter, which Baccara Eagle Land, LLC CEO Ed Bull confirmed had been accepted. Supervisor Steve Gallardo expressed reservations about the location's appropriateness, despite the permit's approval. The project still faces additional hurdles, including final approvals from the EPA and the military, before it can move forward.
