Mohrfeld talks data centers, cancer, growth, and more during townhall

He emphasized the need for statewide and county-level regulation of data centers, rather than leaving the responsibility solely to local planning and zoning commissions. Mohrfeld also highlighted concerns about insufficient energy supply in the region, impacting industrial growth.
Democratic District 100 state representative candidate and former Fort Madison mayor, Matt Mohrfeld, held a town hall event in Donnellson, Iowa, where he discussed a range of issues, including growing cancer rates, dwindling healthcare options, education funding, potential energy shortages, the state budget, and data center development.
Regarding data centers, Mohrfeld addressed the "controversial data center project" located just outside Fort Madison. He stressed the importance of environmental protection, including noise pollution, and called for data centers to be properly located with necessary buffer zones. Mohrfeld advocated for mandating new technologies, low water usage, and other environmental safeguards for any data centers in the area. He criticized the current system where local, volunteer planning and zoning commissions bear the brunt of regulatory decisions, suggesting that Iowa cities, counties, and the state must collaborate to establish minimum standards and control the industry. He highlighted that some companies intentionally seek out counties without zoning laws.
Mohrfeld also raised concerns about energy shortages, stating that insufficient energy supply, particularly natural gas, is a primary reason new industries decline to establish operations in the region. He proposed investing in energy access expansion and low-carbon energy sources to foster regional growth. Throughout his discussion, Mohrfeld emphasized the need for legislative focus on rural Iowa, noting that Lee County has experienced significant population decline while metropolitan areas have grown, arguing that "Des Moines is making laws for Des Moines" and that Southeast Iowa needs a stronger voice.
