City officials to decide on new data center in South San Jose
Menlo Equities is seeking final approval from San Jose officials to build a 444,400-square-foot data center on 15.5 acres in South San Jose. Residents have raised concerns about potential increases in traffic, noise, energy use and water demand, while the project remains under city review.
Menlo Equities has applied for approval to build a 444,400-square-foot data center on a 15.5-acre parcel along Charlotte Drive in South San Jose, next to Western Digital’s existing technology campus. The proposal would demolish an existing 165,000-square-foot building, with construction potentially beginning in late 2027 and operations starting by late 2029.
San Jose planners have approved the subdivision that created the data center parcel, but the project requires a separate development review and final city approval. Residents, including Sonal Nayak, have expressed concerns about traffic, noise, energy consumption and water demand, and Deputy Planning Director Manira Sandhir acknowledged the city’s awareness of community concerns.
