Iowa Communities Grapple with Data Center Proposals and Moratoriums
The Salix City Council voted to draft a one-year moratorium on data centers while studying related policies and ordinances. This comes as a new data center is being considered near Salix, and a separate $10 billion data center project near Clinton faced public opposition, though Clinton city leaders opted against delays. U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley also discussed data centers in Sioux City.
Salix City Council voted 3-2 to initiate a one-year moratorium on data center development to allow time for policy and ordinance study. This decision follows a proposal for a data center on 900 recently annexed acres northeast of the town, with MidAmerican Energy confirming its involvement in developing the potential site. The identity of the end user for this project remains undisclosed.
Simultaneously, a proposed $10 billion data center campus near Clinton has generated significant public opposition. Despite intense debate over the project's potential economic benefits and environmental impacts, Clinton city leaders opted against delaying the data center developments.
This comes as U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley engaged in a Q&A session with employees at the Chesterman Company in Sioux City, where he addressed the broader implications of data centers and potential legislation.
