North Dakota Public Service Commission candidate John Pederson is calling for statewide oversight of energy-intensive data centers and crypto-mining facilities. He argues that developers should bear infrastructure costs so residential utility customers do not face higher rates, citing a crypto-mining facility in Williston as an example.

John Pederson, a candidate for a six-year seat on the North Dakota Public Service Commission, is urging statewide regulation of data centers and crypto-mining facilities. Speaking on KFGO, he criticized what he described as a fragmented system in which out-of-state technology companies negotiate separately with townships and counties.

Pederson said energy and infrastructure costs associated with new facilities should be paid by the developers rather than residential ratepayers. He pointed to a crypto-mining facility in Williston, where additional infrastructure demands contributed to higher local utility bills, and reiterated his support for data center moratorium proposals previously advanced with community advocate Vern Thompson.
