The Elkhart County Plan Commission voted to recommend the denial of a rezoning proposal for the Bristol Innovation Park, a site intended for a future data center. This decision came after a lengthy five-hour public hearing on Thursday, July 9, which saw hundreds of residents attend St. Mark's United Methodist Church to express their opposition.

The proposal aimed to combine 18 parcels into a planned unit development, with planning representatives from JPR stating that no specific buyer or project has been identified yet, and the rezoning was to prepare the land. Residents raised significant concerns regarding potential noise, environmental impacts, increased traffic, and declining property values, with one consultant estimating sound impacts on approximately 1,300 nearby homes.

Commissioners also questioned the classification of a data center as M-1 industrial use, expressed concerns about wetlands, and highlighted the proposal's lack of long-term specificity. While Commissioners Steve Warner and Brian Dickerson voted against the motion to recommend denial, the majority supported it. The Bristol Town Council is scheduled to make the final decision on Thursday, August 6, at a larger venue to accommodate anticipated public attendance.
