Despite opposition, Hermantown moving forward with Google data center
Hermantown’s City Council unanimously approved key agreements for Google’s proposed data center despite resident protests and opposition. The project still requires wetland permits, approval of its electric service agreement, and resolution of several lawsuits before construction can begin.
Hermantown is advancing Google’s proposed data center after the City Council unanimously approved several key agreements following hours of public comment and protests. The project has faced sustained opposition from residents concerned about noise, water use, electricity demand and environmental impacts.
Google withdrew its request for up to $80 million in property tax breaks before the vote. Construction cannot begin until the project addresses several lawsuits, secures required wetland permits and receives Minnesota Public Utilities Commission approval for its electric service agreement.
