Fort Madison Planning and Zoning Commission to Discuss AI Data Center Project and Ordinances
Fort Madison's Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public meeting to discuss a proposed AI data center and review new ordinances. Property owner Dustin Wolgemuth revealed the project's nature, while Lee County Supervisors previously enacted a moratorium on data center construction due to public concerns about environmental impacts, electricity, and water use.
The City of Fort Madison's Planning and Zoning Commission is set to convene a public meeting to address a proposed AI data center project located on a hillside off Business 61. Property owner Dustin Wolgemuth recently confirmed the project's nature in a letter to Fort Madison City Manager Laura Liegois, seeking to clarify public misconceptions regarding AI data centers' local impact.
Wolgemuth, who previously approached Lee County Supervisors about the project without revealing its full scope, highlighted common concerns around electricity, water usage, and noise, asserting they are unfounded. He stated that utility providers would vet electrical service, and water requirements depend on the final cooling system design, while modern AI data centers incorporate noise reduction technologies. Despite his efforts to provide information, Wolgemuth has declined previous media requests.
The project has generated significant local discussion and led the Lee County Supervisors to enact a moratorium on data center construction within the county until more information on potential impacts is available. The Fort Madison Planning & Zoning Commission will review proposed ordinances related to extraterritorial jurisdiction and high infrastructure impact developments, eventually making recommendations to the Fort Madison City Council. Two parcels of the project fall within city limits, allowing the city to regulate those areas to create buffer zones. Initially, in 2025, Liegois noted that Wolgemuth had approached the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission about a bitcoin mining facility on the site.
