An intense opposition movement against a proposed data center project, dubbed "Project Spring," has escalated in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, leading to a recall petition drive targeting three city council members. Cody Worrell (Ward 1), Matt Barnett (Ward 2), and Mike Burdge (Ward 3) are facing removal efforts after they were among the six council members who voted in February to approve the rezoning of 827 acres for the data center's construction.
Kyle Schmidt, president of the board of directors for the Protect Sand Springs Alliance, organized the recall, stating his desire for change and belief that the system is currently stacked against citizens. Councilman Burdge defended his vote, citing the potential for increased industry and jobs in the town of 20,000.
