Google has announced a series of new water stewardship initiatives, including a significant project in Zumbrota, Minnesota, to mitigate concerns regarding the substantial water consumption of its AI data centers. The tech giant has pledged to achieve water replenishment that exceeds its data center usage by 2030. As part of this commitment, Google plans to release a comprehensive water-use report and actively seek alternative water sources for its operations.

The company's strategy involves modernizing local water and wastewater infrastructure and safeguarding at-risk watersheds. One key initiative, located along the Zumbro River in southeast Minnesota, focuses on restoring 84 acres of floodplain forest. This project, which will create a one-mile ecological corridor, aims to enhance water quality and is being undertaken with the assistance of the non-profit Trust For Public Land. Google is reportedly investing approximately $17 million across 165 such water stewardship projects globally.
