A new tool developed by the University of Iowa, named the Iowa Data Center Decision Tool, aims to assist community leaders across the state in evaluating the potential impacts of data center projects. Created by the Hubble Environmental Law Initiative and Tippie's Social Impact Community, the team expedited its development to meet urgent community needs.
The free tool is designed to be neutral, neither pro nor anti-data center. Instead, it guides communities through a series of questions to consider various factors, including water and energy demands, road infrastructure, and how a project integrates with the local community fabric. It recognizes that different data center types and community characteristics necessitate tailored evaluations.
Additionally, the tool prompts officials to examine possible economic benefits such as job creation and tax revenue. Its ultimate goal is to equip communities with comprehensive information, enabling them to be better prepared and on an equal playing field when negotiating with experienced data center developers.
