Data Center Construction Temporarily Restricted In Christian County
The Christian County Board approved a temporary restriction on data center construction until 2027, allowing time for new ordinances and research. This decision was made after community members voiced concerns about potential environmental pollution and negative impacts on quality of life and agriculture.
The Christian County Board convened a special meeting on Thursday, August 27th, to discuss and subsequently approve a temporary restriction on data center construction within the county. This measure will remain in effect until 2027 or until an alternative decision is reached, aiming to allow the community ample time to establish appropriate ordinances and conduct further research regarding data center developments.
During the meeting, community members expressed significant concerns. Debbie Daniels, whose farm is located near a site where Eagle Rock had previously planned a data center, highlighted potential pollution issues including impacts on water, air, light, and sound. She also shared her relief that Eagle Rock withdrew its project and appreciated the board's support for the temporary ban to enable the creation of proper regulations.
Another resident, Jay McGuire, spoke about the profound negative effects a data center could have on his home, business, and livelihood, particularly his passion for horses, which he stated are agitated by such facilities. Following these public comments, County Board Chairman Brian Sharp called for a motion to approve the temporary restriction, which passed unanimously without further discussion or objection.
