Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chair Deshundra Jefferson advanced a directive during the June 23 Board meeting to develop a comprehensive data center decommissioning policy framework. This initiative, building on prior board actions related to zoning and design standards for data centers, aims to address planning, environmental protection, infrastructure removal, recycling/disposal, security, workforce impacts, and site redevelopment.
Public comment revealed strong support for proactive measures. Roger Yackel of Gainesville emphasized the need for financial bonds to cover dismantlement and land restoration, while Lisa Polgar of the Potomac District warned of impacts on water and electric bills and urged accountability for developers. Rachel Ellis and Elena Schlossberg echoed concerns about obsolescence and the difficulty of repurposing specialized data center structures, calling the directive "forward thinking."
