Data center projects may fill up Linn County landfill much sooner than expected
Construction waste from QTS and Google data center projects near Cedar Rapids has increased landfill intake in Linn County by more than 10%. Officials warn the landfill could reach capacity before its projected 2039 date, potentially raising disposal costs if waste must be hauled to other counties.
Construction and demolition debris from large QTS and Google data center projects near Cedar Rapids has driven a significant increase in waste arriving at the Linn County landfill. Joe Horaney, interim director of the region’s solid waste agency, said annual landfill intake rose from 182,000 tons to 203,000 tons, with the projects responsible for much of the increase.
The landfill is currently projected to reach capacity by 2039, but the added construction waste could shorten that timeline. The agency is considering sending waste to other facilities, including one in Black Hawk County, though longer hauling distances and fuel costs could increase prices for residents.
