Revised data center moratorium faces backlash
The Michigan City Common Council held the first official reading of a revised data center moratorium that would temporarily halt approval of new data center projects while zoning rules are reviewed. Residents and the authors of the original moratorium are protesting the revision, which they believe gives concessions to Google.
The Michigan City Common Council advanced a revised data center moratorium to a second reading during its Oct. 20 meeting. The proposal would temporarily suspend approval of new data center development while the Plan Commission reviews and recommends changes to the city’s comprehensive zoning ordinance.
The revision has drawn continued backlash from residents and the authors of the original moratorium, who are demanding that their version be reinstated. Protesters demonstrated outside City Hall, while some members of the public criticized the revised language as providing concessions to Google.
