The Delta County Planning Commission in Escanaba, Michigan, has approved a draft moratorium on data center and cryptocurrency mining developments. Commission Chair Amy Berglund stated the moratorium would pause such projects for up to 12 months, allowing the commission to develop a suitable zoning ordinance rooted in informed decision-making for the nine townships it oversees. During public comment, residents voiced mixed opinions. One Escanaba Township resident highlighted the potential financial benefits for the community through increased tax bases and job creation. Conversely, another resident from Escanaba Township expressed concerns about a local labor shortage and existing housing shortages, questioning the feasibility of staffing data centers and accommodating new workers. The approved draft will now proceed to legal counsel for review to ensure its clarity and scope. Berglund emphasized the importance of community input, acknowledging both the potential benefits and impacts of data centers, and stated that experts would be invited to discuss the pros and cons. The commission noted that it has not yet received any formal data center project proposals.
