Marshalltown to hold community roundtable on proposed data center zoning regulations
The Marshalltown Planning & Zoning Commission is hosting a "Community Roundtable" to discuss proposed zoning regulations for future data centers in the city. This follows a four-month moratorium on data center development enacted by the City Council. The goal is to gather community input to help shape regulations that protect local resources while leveraging economic opportunities.
The Marshalltown Planning & Zoning Commission is set to host a "Community Roundtable" on Thursday evening, August 27, at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum to discuss proposed zoning regulations for future data center developments in the city.
This event follows a four-month moratorium on data center development implemented by the Marshalltown City Council in July. During this period, Zoning Administrator Clayton Ender was tasked with drafting amendments to the city's zoning ordinance to specifically address data center development. Currently, data centers are categorized under "Major Utilities," with specific development details handled via Special Permits reviewed by the Board of Adjustment.
The proposed new regulations aim to provide clear guidelines for developers, addressing community concerns and protecting local resources. Neither the Zoning Administrator nor the P&Z Commission has the authority to ban data centers, a power reserved for the City Council. The roundtable will focus on these proposed amendments, allowing residents to provide input.
Following the roundtable, the Zoning Administrator will refine the regulations based on community and Commission recommendations. The Planning & Zoning Commission is scheduled to discuss these regulations further at a meeting on September 17, with a final draft to be presented to the community at an Open House in mid-October.
