Data center could sprout on empty chunk of land at prime San Jose site
Prologis has filed a proposal with San Jose city planners to develop a 516,000-square-foot data center on Silver Creek Valley Road. The project is designed for 99 megawatts and will include an onsite substation, with Prologis funding transmission interconnection work. The company also intends to enroll in clean energy programs, with expected water demand equivalent to 40 households.
Prologis, a major real estate firm, is seeking to develop a 516,000-square-foot, three-story data center at 5977 Silver Creek Valley Road in south San Jose, California. The company has filed a formal proposal with San Jose city planners for the project, which will include 30,000 square feet of office space. The 15-acre site was acquired by a Duke Realty affiliate in 2021 for $40.2 million, prior to Prologis's acquisition of Duke Realty in 2022.
The proposed data center is designed with an electricity capacity of 99 megawatts and will feature an onsite substation and a dedicated backup generation facility. Prologis has committed to funding the necessary transmission interconnection work, including a second, independently routed transmission line to enhance grid reliability. Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), whose nearby substation capacity was recently doubled, plans further expansions to serve the community, which Prologis says will benefit the project.
Environmental considerations include an annual water demand equivalent to 40 households, primarily driven by irrigation, with smaller demands from data hall dehumidifiers and office use. Prologis also intends to participate in San Jose Total Clean Energy programs or similar initiatives to promote carbon-free power. The company anticipates a two-year, phased construction period for the development.
