Columbus, Indiana-based Cummins Inc. has revealed plans to provide its most substantial battery storage system to date for a major U.S. data center development. The undisclosed data center project aims to address significant power surges, particularly those driven by artificial intelligence workloads, through this advanced energy solution.

According to a company news release, the new battery system is engineered to manage rapid fluctuations in electricity consumption. Its capability for quick charging and discharging will be crucial for stabilizing the power grid and mitigating the risk of outages during periods of peak demand. Jenny Bush, president of Cummins’ Power Systems business, highlighted that such battery storage solutions offer data center operators greater flexibility in scaling their power infrastructure to meet expanding needs.

The deployment of battery systems is becoming increasingly common among data center developers, who are navigating challenges related to electricity grid limitations and escalating energy costs. Cummins launched this particular line of battery storage technology in May 2025. The company, which employs approximately 67,400 people globally, reported $2.8 billion in earnings on $33.7 billion in sales in 2025.
