Prince George’s Co. bill may pull the plug on data center at former Landover Mall site
The Prince George’s County Council passed legislation that requires the proposed Brightseat Park data center at the former Landover Mall site to undergo renewed council review. The measure is intended to prevent the project from moving forward amid strong local opposition and follows the county’s extension of a data center development moratorium.
The Prince George’s County Council passed legislation requiring the Brightseat Park data center application at the former Landover Mall site in Landover to return before the council for approval. Council member Shayla Adams Stafford, whose district includes the site, said a 2021 change had allowed the project to bypass the council’s approval process and brought it close to a residential community.
The new law also requires more detailed site plans and expanded public review for future data center proposals. Adams Stafford said the additional review will effectively kill the Landover project because of substantial opposition. The legislation follows the county’s extension of a moratorium on new data center development and public concerns that officials learned about the project only shortly before it advanced.
