This pause is intended to allow the city to review and update its planning and zoning regulations, specifically addressing concerns about the impact of data center facilities on the community. The proposed amendment is scheduled for a second reading on August 24.
Helena, Alabama city leaders are weighing a proposal to enact a 180-day temporary suspension on various new and expanded developments, including data centers, gas stations, and auto-related businesses. This proposed amendment to the city's development moratorium aims to provide officials with time to review and update existing planning and zoning regulations.
The city council intends to use this pause to determine appropriate locations for these types of businesses and to evaluate the need for additional operating requirements. During the proposed suspension, new activities for these uses would also be prohibited within 500 feet of Highways 17, 52, 58, and 95.
Helena City Council member Jeff McDaniels stated that the goal is to update zoning rules to ensure developments are situated in "clearly defined and compatible zoning districts." Data centers are specifically highlighted, with City Council President Brooke Dodson noting that such facilities have raised concerns in other communities, prompting a proactive and cautious approach from Helena leaders. Dodson expressed hope that the moratorium would coincide with a revised Planning and Zoning Ordinance.
The proposed amendment is slated for a second reading during the Helena City Council meeting on August 24.
