Indianapolis City-County Councilor Ron Gibson's east-side home was shot at, an incident seemingly connected to a note reading "no data centers" found on his doormat. Police, assisted by the FBI, are investigating the shooting, which damaged his front door, as an act of politically motivated violence. The attack is believed to be linked to Gibson's support for a controversial data center that city officials recently approved in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood, which is part of his district. Gibson and his 8-year-old son were home during the 12:45 a.m. shooting on April 6. Neighbors like Nola Childs and Dehia Williams expressed unease, though Williams noted that gunshots are common in their area. Protect Martindale-Brightwood, a group that organized opposition to the data center, quickly condemned the violence, asserting that their backlash is based on legitimate concerns about community engagement and environmental impact, and they do not condone violence. Shonna Majors, Brightwood Community Center director and involved with the group, emphasized that the incident diminishes their proper advocacy efforts. Gibson, who has faced significant criticism over the data center, strongly condemned the violence, stating that while protest and argument are acceptable, such acts are "insane" and require "swift justice." He shared that despite his military service and past council terms, this incident was the "scariest thing I've ever experienced." Police have installed temporary cameras in the Devington neighborhood to enhance safety as the investigation continues.
