The Helena City Council in Alabama recently conducted a first reading for a proposed ordinance that seeks to impose a temporary suspension on the establishment of new data centers, along with gas stations and auto/mechanic shops.
The ordinance proposes amending the city's current zoning regulations to introduce temporary restrictions, allowing the city to thoroughly review and update its existing rules concerning these types of developments. The restrictions would specifically affect properties and districts within a 1,000-foot radius of Highways 17, 52, and 95.
City Council President Brooke Dodson explained that a 500-foot revision within the proposal would permit certain preliminary site plans to advance. During a public hearing, resident Francis Hines raised concerns about potential health impacts for citizens in the affected areas, questioning the need for additional businesses like oil exchanges near food service establishments and residential zones.
The proposed ordinance is currently under consideration and has not yet taken effect. The City Council is scheduled to hold a final vote on the measure during its upcoming meeting on Monday, August 24.
