Google announced on Monday that it has finalized an agreement with MidAmerican Energy regarding a potential data center development in Salix, Iowa. The technology giant aims to explore the project to meet increasing user demand for its products and services.
Trent Fellers, Google's Regional Head of Data Center Public Affairs, stated the company plans to engage in a public process, presenting proposals and addressing residents' questions to understand how the project can benefit the community. Google will not seek local property tax abatements or rebates, with tax revenue directly benefiting the City of Salix, Woodbury County, local school districts, and other government agencies.
Fellers also highlighted Google's commitment to environmental stability, including paying for power, mitigating sound and visual impacts, and practicing water stewardship. Google will initiate direct community conversations and is scheduled to attend the Salix City Council meeting on August 12, 2026.
This development follows ongoing discussions since April when the city council annexed approximately 900 acres of land, and MidAmerican Energy confirmed its involvement in a possible data center development in June.
