Gov: Dorr Planning Commission, Dorr Zoning Board of Appeals, Dorr Township Board
Dorr Planning Commission Chairman Dan Beute resigned from his township roles, citing stress from public backlash surrounding a proposed Microsoft data center in Dorr Township. Beute, who served on the Planning Commission since 2015 and the Zoning Board of Appeals since 2020, stated that a recent health scare prompted him to re-evaluate his commitments. The resignation was announced at a Planning Meeting by Bob Wagner.
The Dorr Planning Commission has faced "intense pressure" from residents concerned about Microsoft's plans to build a data center on land purchased in 2024. During a public hearing, community members raised issues regarding potential health impacts, water usage, and noise from the facility. Furthermore, allegations of conflict of interest were made against Professional Code Inspections (PCI) employees, who consult for the township, suggesting they were too "welcoming" to Microsoft. Lori Castello of PCI defended the company, explaining their role in ensuring compliance with township ordinances and their professional conduct.
Similar accusations were directed at Planning Commissioner Jody Schaendorf, whose asphalt company, Black Gold Transport, was speculated to benefit from paving contracts for the data center. Schaendorf dismissed these claims, asserting that his company would have to bid competitively for any work. The exchange highlighted the deep divisions within the community, with neither side able to convince the other amidst the ongoing debate. The township board is now seeking nominations to fill Beute's vacated seat on the Planning Commission.
