Tonganoxie vows to defeat proposed Project Bluestem's hyperscale data center
About 150 people gathered in Tonganoxie to oppose the proposed Project Bluestem hyperscale data center campus. Residents criticized local leadership and argued that the project does not fit the community, while opposition continues to grow ahead of further county decisions.
Residents gathered in Tonganoxie on Sunday to organize against Project Bluestem, a proposed hyperscale data center campus. Speakers said responsible AI development should account for community concerns and accused corporations and local officials of failing to protect residents.
The opposition follows a recent special meeting involving the Leavenworth County Commission, where more than 1,000 neighbors reportedly spoke against the project. Political tensions have also increased after commissioners voted 3-2 to remove Mike Steven as commission chair, with opponents arguing that county leadership has not provided adequate guidance on the development. Organizers said they intend to continue fighting the project and mobilizing voters.
