A significant data center proposal in Indiantown, Florida, by developer Silver Fox 606 has been withdrawn. The project, which aimed to construct a 2 million square foot facility, is now off the table, at least temporarily. Simultaneously, local residents are raising alarms over another land-related issue. Florida Power and Light (FPL) has submitted a rezoning request for undeveloped agricultural land on Canner Highway. Residents like Darryl McAllister and Myrtle Green expressed deep concern that converting this farmland to light industrial zoning could facilitate future data center construction, leading to negative impacts on the water table, local wildlife, and quality of life due to potential heat and noise. In response to these fears, FPL stated that their Sorrow Groves Planned Unit Development application is merely a planning framework and does not represent a specific project or site plan. Village Manager Teran Chris further clarified that a data center is "not on the table," and the immediate plan for FPL's rezoning is to build a substation. Chris also noted that the Planned Unit Development document allows for additional restrictions and layers of protection. Despite these assurances, residents remain wary. McAllister plans to attend an upcoming Village Council meeting to voice her opinion that the village is losing its original vision amidst these development changes.
