Google formally announces plans for Botetourt County data center

Google officially confirmed its plans to develop a data center campus in Botetourt County, Virginia, committing to fund all necessary water and energy infrastructure upgrades. The company is collaborating with the Western Virginia Water Authority on cooling solutions and has secured a Power Purchase Agreement for the Rocky Forge Wind project's output to power the facility. The project, which has been publicly known since Botetourt County announced a land sale in June 2025, has encountered vocal opposition from residents concerned about environmental impacts and water usage. Botetourt County Administrator Gary Larrowe lauded the partnership with Google for its financial benefits and opportunities for the community, while Google's Amber Tillman emphasized the company's dedication to protecting local resources and investing in the workforce. Google also plans to support community-focused energy projects in Southwest Virginia.
