Nicholasville votes to pause new data center developments

The Nicholasville City Commission has approved a six-month moratorium on new data center developments, voting 4-1 to authorize Mayor Alex Carter to sign the municipal order. The original proposal called for a one-year moratorium, but commissioners reduced it after discussion. Commissioner Pete Sutherland cast the sole dissenting vote, expressing concerns that the moratorium might completely deter data center development in the city.
Nicholasville resident Nicole Mers voiced the community's worries, stating that too many questions remain unanswered regarding the potential impacts of data centers. Her concerns specifically highlighted noise levels, water consumption, and electricity demand, questioning whether the city would need to install more power lines without clear answers from leaders. City officials plan to utilize the six-month pause to further study these issues.
