Gov: Griffin City Commission, Spalding County District 2, City of Griffin Water Department
The City of Griffin, Georgia has agreed to sell up to 5 million gallons of water per day to the City of Hampton. This was announced by Griffin City Manager Jessica O'Connor at a city commission meeting in response to concerns raised by Spalding County District 2 Commissioner James Dutton.
Dutton alleged that the water would be used for a proposed data center on 603.56 acres near the Echo Park Speedway. However, O'Connor clarified that Griffin is a regional water supplier and simply sells wholesale water to other jurisdictions, but does not have any control over how that water is used by the receiving municipalities. She stated that Griffin provides water to several surrounding counties and cities, including Spalding County, Lamar County, Butts County, Pike County, the City of Williamson, the City of Concord, and Coweta County.
O'Connor emphasized that Griffin's contracts with these other jurisdictions do not give Griffin any say in the retail use of the water. The city commission also discussed the specific amount of water being sold to Hampton, but no further details were provided.
