The Portland Town Board in New York has passed a resolution expressing general support for a proposed data center project at the former Sugar Hill Golf Course. The board emphasized that full consideration is pending additional details, site-specific plans, and regulatory reviews, including environmental assessments and infrastructure impacts. This development follows the town's prior opposition to selling the property to New York State Parks due to tax roll concerns.

The Portland Town Board has publicly voiced its support for a proposed data center development to be constructed on the grounds of the former Sugar Hill Golf Course. During its latest meeting, the Board passed a resolution indicating its general conceptual approval for the project, though reserving final consideration until more detailed site plans, environmental assessments, infrastructure impact studies, and regulatory reviews are completed. Supervisor Rich Lewis clarified that the proposed facility would house information technology infrastructure and network equipment. The Town's decision to support the project stems from a desire for economic development, particularly after previously opposing an inquiry from the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to purchase the Sugar Hill Golf Course in November 2024. At that time, Lewis expressed concerns that losing the property from the tax roll would shift over $20,000 in taxes to remaining residents and the Brocton Central School District. The Board believes an alternative development, such as the data center, would be more financially beneficial to the town. The resolution also highlights the Town Board's readiness to collaborate with the developer to address any zoning issues, land use considerations, and other relevant matters that may arise throughout the project's development process.
