The Poway City Council is considering advancing an ordinance that would make standalone, third-party AI data centers an impermissible land use anywhere in the city. The proposal follows a unanimous July 21 vote directing city staff to draft the ban at the request of Mayor Steve Vaus and Councilwoman Anita Edmondson.

Poway officials say AI data centers could place significant demands on water and electricity infrastructure and create impacts involving utility rates, air quality, noise and fire safety. Supporters also question their local economic and employment benefits, while union representative Sean Ellis urged the city to study different types of data centers before proceeding. If the council advances the measure, it could vote on adoption Oct. 6, with the ordinance taking effect 30 days after approval.
