OpenAI has secured a landmark 10-gigawatt data center lease in Ohio, partnering with SoftBank's SB Energy and backed by Nvidia. This historic project, situated on a former federal uranium site, is envisioned to become one of the world's largest artificial intelligence hubs. It is expected to consume massive amounts of energy, equivalent to powering seven million homes, and is actively supported by high-level U.S. government officials as vital infrastructure.
Nvidia is playing a crucial role in facilitating the project's financing, providing a unique financial backstop that guarantees completed data center asset values rather than direct operational lease payments. This structure enables SB Energy to raise debt financing without exposing Nvidia to direct lease risks. Under a Phase 1 5-gigawatt agreement, Nvidia is also the exclusive chip provider, gaining an equity stake in SB Energy and ensuring significant hardware sales.
The immense energy demands of the campus will be met by a new 9.2-gigawatt gas plant. Nvidia's $1.5 billion investment further solidifies this technology ecosystem, uniting OpenAI's vision, Nvidia's computing power, and SB Energy's grid infrastructure. This collaboration aims to establish Ohio as a central hub for future AI intelligence and marks the official beginning of the next era of hyperscale AI infrastructure.
