Virginia Beach officials confirm there are no concrete plans for a data center in the city, despite recent speculation. Virginia Beach City Councilman Worth Remick stated he is unaware of any current discussions within the council regarding a data center. Mayor Bobby Dyer reiterated that if a data center project were proposed, the public would be fully involved in the discussion, acknowledging the controversial nature of data centers. Speculation arose following a Virginia Beach City Council closed session that listed "Project Hummingbird" as a topic. A city spokesperson clarified to 13 News Now that this project is unrelated to a data center, instead being a request for a $100,000 event sponsorship. Further concern stemmed from a Virginia Beach Development Authority meeting where $800,000 was approved for "Global Link's data centers," which was clarified to be for an offshore cable landing place, not a traditional data center facility. Councilman Remick expressed his personal view that a data center would not be a suitable use for the city's limited land resources. While there are no immediate plans, he noted that the planning commission is actively examining how the city would process permits if a data center proposal were to emerge in the future.
