Staff at the Virginia State Corporation Commission attribute this surge to rising demand from data centers, which is forcing the utility to increasingly rely on the volatile PJM Interconnection wholesale electricity market. This dependency becomes particularly costly during peak demand periods like heat waves or extreme cold. Dominion Energy is seeking permission to issue bonds to defer some fuel cost recovery, potentially capping the immediate customer bill increase at around 5%. The company also suggested that its proposed merger with NextEra Energy could expedite new power plant development, reducing reliance on external market purchases.
The situation highlights a broader tension between the rapid expansion of AI and cloud computing infrastructure and the electric grid's capacity.
