The Ava Board of Aldermen is continuing discussions on a proposed temporary one-year moratorium on data centers and similar high-density computing facilities within city limits. The Ava Board of Aldermen has continued its review of Ordinance No. 1173, proposing a temporary one-year moratorium on data centers and other high-density computing facilities within the City of Ava. The ordinance, first read on June 9, was subject to public input during the June 23 meeting.

Mayor Kirk Pueppke emphasized that the moratorium is a proactive, temporary measure to allow city officials to study potential regulations concerning land use, utilities, fire protection, building standards, noise, and setbacks. Alderwoman Jaclyn Stanifer-Nunn confirmed that no data center applications have been submitted to the city. Residents raised concerns regarding water and electrical demand, cooling systems, and noise.

Douglas County Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Weatherman, speaking as a resident, cautioned that the broad language of the proposed ordinance could inadvertently restrict essential governmental digital storage. He urged the city to refine the wording to prevent unintended impacts on local offices, law enforcement, and medical providers. The board acknowledged these concerns and agreed to table the matter for additional review of the ordinance's language.

The Mayor stated the council supports the concept of a moratorium to allow for education and informed decision-making regarding future long-term regulations, citing rapid technological changes. State officials, including Rep. Costlow, are expected to discuss data centers at an upcoming Lincoln Day Dinner in Douglas County.
