Google office building gets Laramie County OK, will support Project Tembo data center
The Laramie County Planning Commission approved Google's conditional use permit for an office building to support its $17 billion Project Tembo data center in south Laramie County. Google is now the lead owner and operator of the project, formerly Project Jade, taking over from Crusoe, and has revised the site plan to be slightly smaller.
The Laramie County Planning Commission has granted Google a conditional use permit for a two-story office building intended to complement its extensive 700-acre data center, known as Project Tembo, in south Laramie County, Wyoming. This approval marks another step forward for the project, which is strategically located off U.S. Highway 85 and represents a substantial $17 billion investment in the community, according to Eric Murray, Google’s land acquisition and development lead.
Google has assumed the role of lead owner and operator for Project Tembo, which was previously called Project Jade and was initially spearheaded by Crusoe. While Crusoe's initial five-warehouse site plan was approved by the Laramie County Board of Commissioners in January, the company later withdrew. Google subsequently revised the plans, reducing the number of proposed warehouses from five to four and adjusting projected peak construction worker numbers.
In addition to Google, Tallgrass is slated to construct natural gas power facilities for the data center, and Related Digital, a data center company already operating in Cheyenne, will lead the project's development. The recently approved office building, dubbed HUB-1, will be situated on an adjacent 32.83-acre lot and is designed to provide employees with office space, culinary facilities, and recreational areas, embodying Google's distinct corporate culture. As a Class B permit, the Planning Commission's approval for HUB-1 is final and does not require further review by the Laramie County Commissioners.
