Capitol rally to call for statewide data center moratorium, regulation
A rally is scheduled at the Michigan State Capitol to advocate for a statewide moratorium on data center developments and new regulations. State Sen. Jim Runestad has sponsored Senate Bill 1018 to establish such a moratorium. Senate Democrats have also introduced a plan to cap data center water use and prevent utility costs from being passed to consumers.
A rally is set to take place at the Michigan State Capitol this week, bringing calls for a statewide moratorium on data center developments. State Sen. Jim Runestad, a Republican from White Lake, is sponsoring Senate Bill 1018, which aims to establish such a pause. Runestad, who will join a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the rally, emphasized the need for legislative action to implement "guardrails" and regulations on the industry.
In parallel, Senate Democrats unveiled their own plan last week. Their proposal seeks to impose caps on data centers' water consumption, prevent utility costs from being shifted to other customers, and prohibit public employees from entering into non-disclosure agreements with data center developers. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has publicly endorsed these proposed protections, stating that "Michiganders have spoken loud and clear" in support of them.
Runestad expressed optimism that both political parties and legislative chambers will reach a consensus on the issue, describing it as a highly bipartisan matter. He stressed that the goal is not to ban data centers entirely, but to ensure responsible development through necessary discussions and regulations.
