Governor announces halt to new data center incentives
Governor J.B. Pritzker announced a halt to new data center tax incentives in Illinois due to concerns over electricity and water usage. He called on the General Assembly to ensure data centers pay their fair share and that residents have an opportunity to comment on proposed projects. Yorkville City Hall noted that the announcement does not impact its previously approved data center projects.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker declared a suspension of new tax incentives for data centers, emphasizing that residents should not bear the costs of these facilities' significant electricity and water consumption. Governor Pritzker stated that data centers are "asking just too much for too little in return" and urged the General Assembly to take action in the veto session to ensure data centers contribute their equitable share.
The Governor also advocated for greater transparency and public participation, asserting that residents need to be informed when data centers are under consideration and be provided with opportunities for comment. Meanwhile, Yorkville City Hall confirmed that, as of Tuesday morning, it had not received any information indicating that the Governor's announcement would affect the three data center projects previously approved for the city: Project Cardinal, Project Steel, and a CyrusOne facility.
