Culpepper argues that Boston's urban density, limited developable land, and existing infrastructure demands are incompatible with the extensive resource consumption of data centers, which he states strain local electricity and water supplies and contribute to pollution.
This proposed ban comes on the heels of an executive order issued by Governor Maura Healey, which mandates that data center developers obtain local approval before proceeding with state permitting. Governor Healey's order also requires developers to fund their own clean energy initiatives or face fees, and adhere to local standards for water, air, and community engagement. District 4 Councilor Brian Worrell has expressed support for Culpepper's amendment, echoing concerns about the environmental impact and strain on city resources. The amendment has been referred to the Committee on Planning, Development, and Transportation for further consideration.
