Escobar: Fort Bliss data center to shrink, shift site and use brackish water
Plans for a proposed data center at Fort Bliss in El Paso are being revised to reduce its size, move it farther from homes and use brackish water for desalination. U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar welcomed the changes but continues to oppose the site’s proximity to residential neighborhoods and its potential reliance on gas-generated power.
The U.S. Army and Carlyle Group have revised plans for a proposed data center at Fort Bliss, reducing the facility’s footprint and moving it away from residential areas. The project is also expected to use brackish water processed at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Plant for desalination.
U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar described the changes as progress after a meeting with El Paso community stakeholders, but said the proposed site remains too close to homes. She also raised concerns about gas-fired power generation and said she would continue advocating for a different location and renewable energy sources.
