San Jose rejects appeal of NVIDIA data center permit as environmental concerns persist
The San Jose City Council unanimously rejected an appeal seeking to block the conversion of a research facility at 300 Holger Way into a data center. The project, associated with Nvidia, will use up to 20 megawatts of power and was approved despite environmental objections from labor groups and residents.
The San Jose City Council rejected an appeal against a special use permit for a proposed Nvidia data center in an existing research and development building at 300 Holger Way in North San Jose. The facility would involve interior upgrades, including data racks, and could use up to 20 megawatts of electricity.
The appeal was filed by a coalition of labor groups and residents concerned about the project’s environmental effects. Councilmembers voted unanimously to uphold city planners’ July 8 approval, although Councilmember Peter Ortiz was absent and Vice Mayor Pam Foley recused herself because of a financial conflict of interest. The decision comes amid broader local opposition to data center development.
