Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman defended the company’s nationwide data center expansion in an op-ed, comparing the AI infrastructure buildout to the creation of the Interstate Highway System. He cited Mississippi as a leading example, where Amazon’s planned investment in Madison County has grown from an announced $10 billion project to more than $20 billion across multiple campuses and development phases.

Amazon says the Mississippi projects currently employ more than 2,300 construction workers and are expected to create more than 1,700 permanent jobs. Garman argued that data centers are not primarily responsible for rising electricity rates and disputed concerns about water consumption, pollution from backup generators and other environmental impacts.

Alongside the op-ed, Amazon announced an Amazon Data Center Commitment, including public reporting of energy and water use, community outreach and infrastructure investments. The company also pledged $1 billion over five years through its Built Together initiative for workforce development, energy efficiency and community projects, as critics continue to question the long-term infrastructure, energy and land-use effects of the Mississippi expansion.
