Meta’s massive data center project underway in rural Louisiana
Meta is actively constructing a multi-billion-dollar, 4-million-square-foot data center named "Project Hyperion" in rural Holly Ridge, Richland Parish, Louisiana. Local officials and business owners express optimism about the economic growth, despite some community concerns regarding water and electricity usage, which are being addressed by the administration.
Meta has commenced construction on "Project Hyperion," a massive multi-billion-dollar data center spanning 4 million square feet across an estimated 3,500 acres in Holly Ridge, an unincorporated community within Richland Parish, Louisiana. The project, described as larger than anticipated by local officials, is expected to bring significant economic development to the rural area.
Delhi Mayor Jesse Washington acknowledged community concerns regarding potential water and electricity consumption by the data center but assured residents that his administration is collaborating closely with project engineers to address these issues. He encouraged a positive outlook, emphasizing the anticipated benefits to the region.
Local business owners, like Angie Hogan of Holly Ridge Nutrition and Tim Allen of Holy Tacos, initially expressed skepticism or had to adjust their plans, but now largely view the project favorably. They highlighted the economic opportunities, such as property sales, rentals for workers, and new business prospects, while also acknowledging potential challenges like increased traffic and the broader impact of change. The local chamber of commerce is credited with maintaining transparency and keeping residents informed.
Former educator Brenda Duffey also expressed hope that the local school systems would benefit from the substantial economic boost generated by the influx of money and activity associated with the data center's construction.
