Opposition is mounting against the proposed Okee One data center in Okeechobee, Florida. A Change.org petition to halt the project has rapidly surpassed 2,200 signatures, significantly exceeding its initial goal of 1,100, which organizer Wyatt Deal notes represents about 5% of Okeechobee's voting population, signaling a great deal of community concern.
Deal expressed worries about the environmental repercussions, particularly the proximity of the proposed site to sensitive waterways connected to Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades. He is organizing a protest scheduled for April 27th at Indian River State College’s Dixon Hendry campus. The college owns the land, which was given to it by the state after the former Okeechobee School for Boys was shut down.
College officials maintain that the data center will initially be small and will include a learning lab for students studying AI and data technology, citing economic growth and job creation as benefits. However, residents are skeptical, viewing data centers as massive industrial facilities that consume vast amounts of electricity, water, and resources, generate heat, and require infrastructure changes that alter the character of the area, while offering only a limited number of long-term jobs.
